12:00 PM - 1:00 PM The Decisions for War in 1914, Sullivan Museum & History Center Lunch N’ Learn

One hundred years ago today, Europe was at peace. No war occurred between European Great Powers for more than 44 years. All crises were solved between the Great Powers. Europe—and the world—were in balance. Naturally with this track record of peace, leaders expected peace to continue. Then why resort to war in 1914? Who were the leaders making decisions for war? How and why does war start? Why does a Serbian–supported terrorist assassination lead to the Great War? What type of war was it thought to be? And, what are the lessons yet to be learned from these signposts of history?

To answer these questions, speaker Michael D. Krause, PhD NU’64 will review European leaders; the plot in Sarajevo; leadership reaction and their objectives; sequence of events; decisions for mobilization; and conduct a retrospect.

Michael D. Krause, PhD NU ’64 is a leader–educator, security specialist, logician and former soldier. His background spans military service in two wars and experience on four continents, participating in five contingency operations.
