Celebration of Chinese New Year--The Year of Dragon
January 23 (Monday) will be Chinese New Year's Day, the first day of the Year of Dragon. WCC food services will cook Chinese cuisine for lunch, inviting the whole Norwich community to enjoy the occasion. The event and other celebratory activities are initiated and organized by the Chinese Program and the Chinese Club.

In Chinese old traditions, every household would open its door for anyone to come in and taste the food and goodies prepared for the occasion. The village Elders would go door-to-door wishing each family good luck and prosperity in the New Year. In modern days, leaders of companies and schools take on the role. Dr. Huang, Senior VPAA will lead the president, vice presidents and the deans going table to table and extending Chinese New Year greetings to students, cadets and faculties who will dine there for lunch on Jan. 23.

Tables will be set up in the lobby by the entrance of WCC and display items which showcase Chinese culture.

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Dog River Workshop
A LOOK AT THE IMPACTS OF IRENE IN THE DOG RIVER VALLEY THROUGH THE SCIENCE OF RIVER MANAGEMENT

Please join us as we discuss the impacts of Tropical Storm Irene in the Dog River watershed and what river science can teach us as we work towards a flood resilient future.

The program will start with an overview of the geology of the Dog River watershed and lead into a presentation on river dynamics and management. This program will look at the interaction and conflicts between the river and our development and how traditional management practices of gravel extraction, straightening and armoring of banks impacts rivers and downstream communities and infrastructure. There will be discussion on how Tropical Storm Irene specifically impacted the Dog River watershed and its communities and how we can change our management practices to improve flood resiliency in the future.

Speakers will include a river scientist and watershed planner from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, a Norwich geology professor, a Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist and town staff.

This workshop is free to the public and we encourage anyone living in or around the river to attend.

Engineering Week Events for Prospective Students
At Norwich, the engineering students will participate in academic, athletic and creative competitions between the engineering disciplines (civil, electrical and computer, and mechanical engineering). Each day, students will try to win “points” and bragging rights over their peers. Some of the week’s highlights include “professor bowling”-where professors serve as the bowling balls, and students bowl them across the outdoor ice skating rink into pins (cardboard boxes); box stacking-students use empty boxes to play a backwards game of Jenga; snow sculptures- each of the disciplines is given a pile of snow (by mid-February, we should have plenty!) and then build a sculpture in keeping with the theme (a few years ago, students built sculptures for the 1980s). While some of the events (dodgeball) aren’t exclusive to engineering, the goal of the week is to get out of the study lounges, classrooms and have fun with being an engineer.

This year, as we have done in the past, we are inviting our accepted engineering students to campus to participate with our current engineers. If you have already been accepted to Norwich, you should have received an invitation regarding E-Week.

Please mark your calendar for February 22-23 and join other prospective engineering students as they participate in a few of the academic and athletic activities, and also have a chance to sit-in on an Introduction to Engineering course, tour the labs spaces and see why Norwich engineering might be a good fit for you. If you are interested in participating, please register here or contact Tim Reardon for more information (reardont@norwich.edu).

1:00 PM CNC Symposium
Join the School of Architecture + Art at Norwich University this Friday, March 9, beginning at 1PM for an entire afternoon with three leaders in the areas of design robotics, virtual design and construction, and responsive architecture. All lectures will be held in Chaplin Hall and are free and open to the public. For more information: (http://norwicharchart.com/march-9-2012-cnc-symposium/)

Guest lecturers will include:

1PM - Nathan King holds Masters Degrees in Architecture and Industrial Design from Virginia Tech and his primary research interests lie at the intersection of the two disciplines. Nathan is currently a Doctor of Design candidate, Teaching Fellow, and lead researcher within the GSD Design Robotics Group at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where his investigation stems from the ongoing development of user-assembled deployable building systems, and seeks to understand the nature of computer-controlled manufacturing and its relationship to building assembly. Through the development of novel fabrication techniques and the utilization of emerging heterogeneous material technologies in large scale direct-manufacturing systems his research will allow for multiple performative characteristics to be realized within a single, functionally complex building component.

3PM - Steve Sanderson is a founding partner of CASE, a virtual design and construction (VDC) and integrated-practice consultancy based in New York City. At CASE, Steve is primarily responsible for leading building performance and technology strategy consulting for significant AECO clients. Prior to CASE, Steve was the Director of Design Technology at SHoP Architects, where he was responsible for introducing and leading SHoP’s building information modeling, parametric design, and environmental modeling efforts; establishing the firm as an industry thought leader. Steve received his Master of Engineering from the Product-Architecture Lab at Stevens Institute and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from Virginia Tech. He has led numerous workshops and speaks internationally on technology and innovation at venues such as SIGGRAPH, SmartGeometry, Autodesk University, AIANY Tech, and LA Design Technology Forum. Since 2009 he has been a part-time lecturer in the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons The New School for Design, where he teaches programming and environmental technology. (http://www.case-inc.com/users/ssanderson)

5PM - Philip Beesley, MRAIC OAA (Professor School of Architecture, University of Waterloo; examiner University College London) is an architect developing responsive kinetic architectural environments that approach near-living functions. His work is widely cited as a pioneer in the rapidly expanding technology of responsive architecture. He has authored and edited eight books, three international proceedings and a number of catalogues, and appears on the cover of Artificial Life (MIT), LEONARDO and AD journals. He has been responsible for some 150 architectural projects. He was selected to represent Canada for the 2010 Venice Biennale for Architecture, and has received worldwide press including WIRED, TEDx, Discovery Channel features. Distinctions include Prix de Rome in Architecture (Canada), VIDA 11.0, FEIDAD, Dora Mavor Moore and a number of Distinguished Performance awards from Waterloo. His graduates have received 2 Fulbright and 2 Tsinghua fellowships and the Berkeley prize. Beesley’s funding includes core CFI, SSHRC, NSERC and Canada Council for the Arts grants and he served as Dissemination Director for the NCE-funded Canadian Design Research Network. His service includes executive board member for ACADIA (Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture), and adjudicator for numerous grant programs. 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM Convocation/Academic Awards Ceremony
Convocation is a calling or coming together of an entire community to support the success of students. For seniors, it is a time of culmination and fruition; for juniors, it is a time of solidification; for sophomores, it is a time of exploration; for freshmen, it is a time of transition. It is appropriate then that – as a community – we come together to remember and remind ourselves of our shared responsibility.
• The Convocation ceremony for 2012 will take place on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in Shapiro Field House.
• Faculty members will convene at 1:00 p.m. in Andrews Hall for robing and formation for the customary processional. Academic regalia is required. All faculty are asked to participate.
• All faculty, staff, and students are expected to attend Convocation. Scheduled classes or laboratories should be rescheduled on Tuesday evening.

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Todd Lecture Series - Peter Diamandis
Peter Diamandis is the co-author of “Abundance” a book which lays out how we will soon be able to meet and exceed the basic needs of every man, woman and child on the planet. Abundance for all is within our grasp. This bold, contrarian view, backed up by exhaustive research, introduces our near-term future, where exponentially growing technologies and three other powerful forces are conspiring to better the lives of billions.

In his keynote address, Diamandis examines human need by category—water, food, energy, healthcare, education, communication and freedom. Diamandis also addresses how a range of powerful technologies such as synthetic biology, embedded networks and cloud computer, and robotics, biotechnology and medicine are transforming what was once scarce into something abundant.

Providing abundance is humanity’s grandest challenge — this is a keynote about how we rise to meet it.

This event is free and open tot he public.

A flu clinic will be held on Wednesday, October 31 in conjunction with the annual Wellness & Benefits Fair. The flu vaccine will be given free of charge to employees; if spouses and dependents are covered under accepted insurance, their shot will also be free. All others will be charged $25.00. Please contact Beth Bowles (Ext. 2075) for further details and to sign up.

In addition, we are offering Biometric Screenings – employees can get their “numbers” during the screening and participate in a health assessment sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield. This screening will measure weight, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and blood pressure. The health assessment is an on-line questionnaire that will provide you with an overall picture of your health. Data collected will enable the Wellness Committee to provide relative programming to our faculty, staff, and students. Slots are also available on 10/16 and 10/17 provided by our nursing students. In return you will receive $50 (subject to taxes) or a wellness-related prize! Sign up when you sign up for your flu shot! All are welcome!

Please contact Ellen Liptak, Ext. 2084, for further info.

"Land use since antiquity - what are the effects? A story of soil relocation"

Overview: "Land use" can mean many things. This talk focuses on deforestation that comes with widespread settlement, and the record of landscape evolution preserved in river valleys. Humans are now the #1 agent of landscape change, and a new epoch is proposed, the Anthropocene. To provide a starting point for discussion, case studies are presented from Greece, Turkey, Portugal and Easter Island, setting the stage for a look at 19th century deforestation of Vermont and the influence on valleys and streams of today.
