Faculty Development Board of Fellows talk

End Date: 1/22/2019End Time: 7:00 PM

Event Description

Presentation by Board of Fellows awardee, Dr. Mark Boonshoft will present on Education, Race, and the Right to Vote in Early America.

Description: Do Americans have the right to an education? My talk suggests we do. During the early years of the republic, democratic reformers built public schools to diffuse education broadly and then justify expanding voting rights for white men. In the process, they made education a civic right. Predictably, that led other Americans, who wanted to deny free blacks their citizenship rights, to advocate for segregated schools.
