Integrating Geochemical Techniques to Better Understand Fractured Bedrock Aquifers

The composition of both rock and water evolve both spatially and temporally in aquifer systems where water is transmitted through fracture networks (secondary porosity) in bedrock. The concentration of inorganic constituents dissolved in groundwater, compared with the composition of rock in- and away-from fracture zones, is useful to understand the dynamic chemical equilibrium of groundwater systems, but is incomplete. Combining whole rock geochemical techniques, hydrochemistry, and in-situ studies of mineralogical changes in fractured bedrock aquifers can offer a more substantive view of water-rock interaction. This study focuses specifically on a series of approaches to integrate microscopy (transmitted light and electron probe microanalysis) with geochemical studies using inductively couple plasma optical emission spectroscopy. This project was funded in part by the Bride Family Foundation for Science and Mathematics Endowment for Faculty Development.
