Norwich University’s Sullivan Museum & History Center Opening Reception for New Exhibit
Start Date: 2/15/2019Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 2/15/2019End Time: 6:00 PM

Event Description

The Norwich University Sullivan Museum and History Center presents “200 Years –  200 Objects,” an exhibition celebrating the university’s bicentennial, with an opening reception Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, from 4 – 6 pm. Light refreshments will be served during the opening reception.

When Norwich University Founder Captain Alden Partridge purchased two Wilson globes for his academy in 1820, he unwittingly started a collection that ultimately became the Sullivan Museum and History Center at Norwich University. Partridge’s legacy as an educational pioneer, as well as contributions of all citizens and soldiers who have walked the campus of Norwich University, is preserved and housed in museum storage. In the final celebratory year of the university’s bicentennial, the Sullivan Museum and History Center will exhibit 200 objects from its collection, many of which have never been on exhibit while others have not been exhibited in quite some time.

“200 Years – 200 Objects” is an exhibition thoughtfully curated to include objects from our collection, as well as documents and images from Archives and Special Collections, that reflect and retell the university’s 200-year history. The exhibition will feature a display case with pull-out drawers in the spirit of early “cabinets of curiosities,” which were meant to intrigue museum visitors and showcase a collection.

As Norwich celebrates the history and legacy of the Academy, Captain Partridge, cadets, civilians, faculty, and staff, Norwich invites the public to interpret how each person may fit into the story of Norwich University.

The state’s only Smithsonian Affiliate, the Sullivan Museum and History Center features permanent exhibitions and changing exhibitions. The museum is free and open to the public Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., excluding holidays. For more information, please visit http://www.norwich.edu/museum.
