Event Description
Sullivan Museum and History Center presents
Reframing Early History:
King Philip’s War and the Abenaki Nation

with guest speaker Lisa Brooks

November 19, 2019
7:00 p.m.
Mack Hall Auditorium

Sponsored by the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences

Join us as Lisa Brooks shares the vital context of the Abenaki country during the First Indian War, later named King Philip’s War. Drawing from her research and insights for her most recent book, Our Beloved Kin, Brooks invites us reframe the historical landscape with the use of important native recollection, rare documents, and maps of native lands. Become familiar with female Wampanoag leader, Weetamoo, unknown in traditional history but well known in native recollection as a true diplomat who was elevated as a leader greater than King Philip.

Lisa Brooks, PhD, is a Professor of English and American Studies at Amherst College. As an award-winning author, literary scholar, and historian she uses indigenous methodologies, including a focus on language, place, community engagement, and deep archival investigation to “decolonize” history and open paths of inquiry.
